Favorite Foods for Future Generations

Does your family have any favorite recipes? Are there particular meals that you enjoy preparing more than the others? Or do you use the same “old” recipe over and over because your family likes it?

During the month of August, we thought about food and its impact on our world – its over-abundance, our wastefulness, and its shortages. On August 21 we spent some time with Doris Longacre Janzen in her More with Less Cookbook, and Joetta Handrich Schlabach in her cookbook Extending the Table. By sharing worldwide recipes and the stories that go with them, we experienced again the organic theology which grew out of our pilgrimages as Mennonite people.

More than that, these cookbooks help to shape who we are becoming. Someone has commented “these cookbooks are truly useful – with simple, helpful stuff about complimentary proteins and ways to create meals that respect what is now called ‘sustainable agriculture.’ These recipes are "kind to your wallet, your waistline, and the larger world."   

So, we decided to create our own Mount Royal Mennonite Cookbook (webpage) which include some of our favorite recipes and the stories that have helped to make them so. To truly enjoy these recipes, one needs to prepare them as well. Enjoy!
