January 6th is celebrated as the Christian Feast day of Epiphany- the visit of the three kings to the toddler Jesus where he is presented with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The three kings find a not a palace, but a humble home. They find not a silver spooned royal child, but a barefooted toddler. What kind of King were they expecting? We’ll talk about the sort of King that Jesus becomes and how that bumps up against our notions of power, influence, and allegiance to Jesus.
