Jonah (and the whale) is one of the most well known Old Testament stories. Jonah has been portrayed as a reluctant missionary to the people of Tarshish. God sends a big fish to swallow Jonah to help ensure that God’s message of judgement reaches its audience. When this story is told, often the story ends when Jonah is spat up on the beach. But when we take a broader view of the entire book of Jonah, a different picture emerges: one of a compassionate, loving God who isn’t very interested in our human notions of fairness. We’ll explore that reading of the book of Jonah this Sunday.
